Motorcyle crash in Hamilton kills a 58 year old man

At approximately 2.30pm on Monday 4 January 2021 emergency services received a call to attend a serious motor vehicle crash between a vehicle and a motorcycle on Hollow Tree Road, Hamilton. The crash was attended by Tasmania Police and numerous Tasmania Ambulance Service personnel.

Sadly a 58 year old Launceston man died at the scene. The accident occurred when a 58 year old Launceston man was riding a green Yamaha Motorcycle on Hollow Tree Road towards Hamilton. Police say the motorcycle failed to negotiate a left hand bend and travelled onto the incorrect side of the roadway, colliding with a white Nissan X-Trail being driven by a 49 year old male from Queensland who was travelling in the opposite direction. The driver of the Nissan took evasive action to avoid the motorcycle but was unable to avoid the collision.  The driver of the Nissan and his front seat female passenger aged 51 also from Queensland were not injured.

Crash Investigation Services and Forensic Services attended the scene and conducted a full examination. Hollow Tree Road was closed for approximately 5 hours with traffic diversions put in place.

Police offer their condolences and thoughts to the family and friends of the motorcycle rider at this tragic time.

“This is a timely reminder to again appeal to all road users to drive to the road and weather conditions and obey all road rules and regulations. Police again take this opportunity to remind the motoring public of the Fatal Five which are significant contributors to serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

A report will now be prepared for the Coroner.
