Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein says the purchase of Liberty Bell Bay, formerly known as TEMCO, is fantastic news for the state, confirming once again “we are building Tasmania’s renewable energy future, with jobs and investment to flow as a result.”
With Tasmania already at 100 percent self sufficient in renewable energy, our premier says the acquisition of the smelter will help us to reach our renewable generation target to 200 percent of our current needs by 2040.
“Our ability to produce clean, green energy in spades sets us apart from the rest of the world and is giving businesses the confidence they need to invest in our State,” Mr Gutwein said on Tuesday.
“Importantly, we are committed to further growing the sector and creating more jobs in Tasmania, which is why we’re taking action to ensure it can continue to prosper,” he continued.
All 250 staff members have been retained through the sale, ending months of uncertainty for workers.
